The Minority in Parliament has accused the government of wasting valuable parliamentary time during the ongoing five-day emergency recall of the House.

According to the Minority, Parliament has so far spent three of the five days of the recall without making significant progress on the key businesses that necessitated the emergency sitting.

The Minority says the three main issues Parliament was recalled to consider were the Banks and Specialised Deposit Taking Institutions (Ammendment) Bill 2026, the appointment of new ministers, and the nomination of justices to the Supreme Court.

Addressing journalists member of parliament for Walewale Dr Kabiru Mahama accused government of consistently passing bill under certificate of urgency without allowing ample time for consultation and consideration.

He further described the approach as an abuse of the governing NDC’s parliamentary majority.

The Minority also criticised what it describes as the cost of keeping Parliament in session while little business is being transacted.

Thus the minority says taxpayers’ resources are being spent, while journalists and other stakeholders continue to report from Parliament without significant business being conducted.

The Minority is therefore demanding greater urgency and leadership from the government to ensure that the remaining days of the emergency recall are used effectively to address the outstanding businesses.
