Kpone-Katamanso water crisis is a national security issue – MCE
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Kpone-Katamanso, Samuel Tetteh Quarshie Morton, has appealed to Ghana Water Limited to urgently intervene in the worsening water crisis affecting several communities in the municipality.
Residents in parts of Kpone-Katamanso have reportedly been without pipe-borne water for close to three months, forcing many households to depend on alternative sources, including water tankers, at high cost.
The prolonged disruption has also raised concerns among residents, who say they have yet to receive communication from Ghana Water Limited (GWL).
Speaking on the Class Morning Show on Monday 5th October, 2026, the MCE described the situation as a serious concern with implications beyond the immediate inconvenience to residents.
“Where Kpone-Katamanso has gotten to with our water challenges, I am classifying it as a national security issue. We are calling on our national security bodies, our intelligence bodies to get themselves involved and let’s get it solved.”
Mr. Morton said repeated engagements with Ghana Water Limited had not yet resulted in a lasting solution, and called for an urgent intervention to ease the burden on residents.
He pointed to the water supply arrangements for industries within the municipality as a possible model that could be extended to communities experiencing shortages.
According to him, factories within the Free Zones enclave that fall under the Kpone-Katamanso Municipality are supplied with water under a rationing arrangement.
“Factories within the free zone, that fall within my municipality have been getting water. Ghana Water has given them rationing dates for their water services. This is what I am also calling for.”
He said a similar arrangement for affected communities would at least provide residents with some predictability and access to water.
“If those industries know that on their rationing dates, at least, two days out of the three days rationing that will come to the industrial hub, they will get water, then they should do same to us.”
The MCE is therefore urging Ghana Water Limited to consider introducing a structured rationing system for affected communities while efforts continue to find a permanent solution to the crisis.
He also appealed to national security and intelligence agencies to take an interest in the situation, describing the prolonged lack of reliable water supply as a matter requiring urgent attention.
