The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with ABC Oyasasee Yie Ltd for the establishment of a fertilizer blending plant in Ghana with an annual capacity of 500,000 metric tons.

The plant, which will be located in the Eastern Region, is intended to support the government's “Feed Ghana” programme and sustainable agriculture production strategy.

Speaking at the MOU signing ceremony held on Wednesday, September 24, 2026, the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Samuel Opoku,  said the partnership comes after almost six months of discussions.

“We met some time ago and then you indicated to us your interest in establishing this blending facility to produce organic fertilizer here in Ghana," the Minister stated.

Hon. Opoku emphasised the importance of organic fertilizer to food security and environmental protection.

"We appreciate perfectly the benefits of organic fertilizer to food production everywhere. And all over the world, agriculture is shifting towards that direction. Because the food we produce is meant for consumption. And even before production, we need to protect the health of the soil. And with organic fertilizer, we are able to protect the health of the soil and then make it more productive so that we can maximize our yields. It is also environmentally friendly," he said.

"You know, when you apply some of these chemicals, it has impacts on the environment. It also impacts on our health after consumption and a whole lot of things. So we are 100% ready to work with ABC Oyasasee to ensure that Ghana is able to produce organic fertilizer in sufficient quantities to support the Feed Ghana program," he added.

The Minister stressed that the Ministry does not want the agreement to remain on paper.

"Today we are happy to sign the MOU. And we don't want it to be a paper agreement as we've been seeing every day. We want to see real action on the ground. And so you need to give us assurance that after signing, within some few days, we'll see action on the ground. So that the ministry, after signing, will also prepare itself to uptake some of your produce to support the Feed Ghana program.”

"The jobs the youth of this nation have been looking for is in the womb of agriculture. And it is only when we make the right investment, take the right decision, and then make sure whatever we decide is implemented, that we can unlock the full potential of the sector to deliver gainful employment to the youth of our nation," Hon. Opoku stated.

On his part, the Director of ABC Oyasasee Yie Ltd, Samuel Adimado said the fertilizer blending plant will not only feed the plant but also protect and strengthen the soil structure.

"Our intention of establishing the fertilizer blend is to support our national food security program which will feed into our sustainable agriculture production strategy. If you look at the fertilizer blending substrate, it is not going to only feed the plant but to also contribute in strengthening and protecting our soil structure.”

"ABC Oyasasee fertilizer will take care of the two because we need a tool for our sustainable production. It is also going to impact on our climate resilience and then also feed into our import substitution," he explained.

Mr. Adimado disclosed that the bulk of raw materials will be sourced from the West Africa sub-region which will contribute to industrial development and reduce import dependency.

He said the project will generate employment for the youth, particularly agriculture graduates, and will also support fertilizer supply within the West African sub-region under the AfCFTA model.

“If you look at our business plan, it is going to feed into the employment of our youth and those who have already completed agriculture. And it will also help in the regional supply of fertilizer. If you look at AfCFTA model, we have positioned ourselves that the fertilizer will not only feed our country but to contribute into the West Africa sub-region," he said.

He expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture for the partnership.
