Mahama calls for stronger African unity amid growing global challenges

John Dramani Mahama has called for stronger African unity, arguing that no country on the continent can effectively address growing global geopolitical and economic challenges on its own.

Speaking at Chatham House in London, President Mahama said African unity should be viewed as a strategic necessity rather than simply a political aspiration.

He noted that the changing global environment requires African countries to work more closely together to protect their interests and strengthen their influence internationally.

The President said Ghana remains committed to partnerships with both traditional allies and emerging global powers but stressed that such relationships must be balanced, pragmatic, and mutually beneficial. He added that Ghana’s foreign policy is guided by national interest and strategic pragmatism rather than ideology or dependence.

According to Mahama, countries that can build relationships across geopolitical divides will be better positioned in an increasingly fragmented world.

He said Ghana is pursuing partnerships that promote market access, technology transfer, job creation, industrialisation, and economic transformation.

He also reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to multilateral cooperation, peaceful coexistence, and international engagement, while noting that responsibility for global stability should be shared by both major powers and developing nations.

President Mahama further linked a country’s international relevance to the strength of its domestic institutions, economy, and human capital.

He highlighted Ghana’s democratic credentials, including constitutional governance, the rule of law, and peaceful transfers of power, as key assets in navigating a changing global order.
