Weija Dam Spillage: MP demands emergency aid for affected communities

News
Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe , Jerry Ahmed Shaib

The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe , Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has appealed for immediate government support for residents displaced by flooding following the release of excess water from the Weija Dam.

Describing the situation as a humanitarian emergency, the MP called on the National Anti-Flood Task Force and other state agencies to urgently provide relief assistance to affected families in downstream communities.

Mr. Shaib made the appeal during a visit to flood-hit areas, where rising waters have forced several residents out of their homes.

According to him, the crisis goes beyond politics and requires swift intervention to protect lives and support displaced persons.

He urged authorities to intensify evacuation efforts and provide temporary financial assistance to victims struggling to cope with the impact of the flooding.

Several communities, including Tetegu, Oblogo and parts of Weija, have been severely affected, with schools and businesses shut down after floodwaters submerged homes and roads.

Some residents were seen moving through waist-deep water in attempts to rescue household items, including furniture, mattresses, electrical appliances and food supplies.

Mr. Shaib also suggested that the volume of rainfall may have exceeded projections, increasing pressure on the dam and contributing to the flooding situation.
