President John Dramani Mahama has directed the immediate dissolution of the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral of Ghana project, formally ending the board's role in overseeing the stalled project.

The decision was communicated in a letter dated September 18, 2026, signed by the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, and addressed to the Chairman and members of the board.

"His Excellency the President has directed the dissolution of the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral of Ghana Project with immediate effect," the letter said.

Handover Deadline

Following the dissolution, the trustees have been directed to liaise with the project consultant and formally hand over the National Cathedral project site to the Ministry by October 31, 2026. The Ministry said the handover was necessary "to allow government to determine the future of the project."

The letter was addressed to the board chaired by Apostle Prof Opoku Onyinah, with copies sent to the Secretary to the President, the Chief of Staff at the Jubilee House, the Deputy Minister and Chief Director of the Ministry, and the Executive Director of the National Cathedral of Ghana Secretariat.

On behalf of President Mahama, Ayariga thanked the trustees for their service.

"I wish to thank you for your commitment to promoting the Christian faith in the country," he said.

Background: A Board That Remained in Office

The latest directive brings clarity to the status of a board that had been expected to cease functioning under an earlier government move in 2025. In July 2025, Minister for Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu announced government's decision to dissolve the National Cathedral Secretariat and begin processes to disband the Board of Trustees, following an audit into the project.

However, Class News gathers that board members remained in office after that 2025 announcement, on the basis that they had not received formal written communication directing them to vacate their positions. Wednesday's letter from Ayariga now provides that formal communication.

The government is expected to determine the next steps for the National Cathedral project, which has remained stalled amid prolonged public debate over its construction, financing and management, once the site handover is complete.
