Mahama grants presidential amnesty to 998 prisoners

President John Dramani Mahama has, upon the recommendation of the Prisons Service Council, and In consultation with the Council of State, and in accordance with Article 72(1) of the constitution, granted amnesty to 998 prisoners out of a total of 1,014 recommended.
The categories of convicts affected are as below:
1. First time offenders - 787
2. Death sentence to be commuted to life imprisonment - 87
3. Life sentences to be commuted to 20 years definite term - 51
4. Seriously ill - 33
5. Over 70 years irrespective of offence - 36
6. Nursing mothers - 2
7. Petitions - 2
This was announced via a statement dated Monday, August 18, 2025, and signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, MP. Spokesperson to the President, Minister, Government Communications.
