President John Dramani Mahama has emphasised the deep historical and cultural ties between Ghana and Caribbean nations, describing ongoing diplomatic engagements as a “historic reconnection” between people of shared ancestry.

Speaking at Ghana’s 69th Independence Day Parade, the president warmly acknowledged the presence of the Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Terrance Drew, whose attendance he said carried special significance.

“Your Excellency Prime Minister Terrance Drew, your presence here today carries great significance for us,” President Mahama said.

According to the President, the growing diplomatic engagement between Ghana and Caribbean nations goes beyond formal state relations and represents a renewed bond among people linked by history and heritage.

“Your visits and our bilateral engagements represent more than just diplomacy. They signify a historic reconnection between Ghana and our brothers and sisters in the Caribbean, branches of the same ancestral tree,” he stated.

President Mahama noted that the relationship between Ghana and countries in the Caribbean reflects centuries-old historical ties rooted in shared ancestry resulting from the transatlantic slave trade.

The presence of Prime Minister Drew at the Independence Day celebration was therefore symbolic of the strengthening partnership between Ghana and Caribbean states as both sides seek to deepen cooperation in areas such as culture, trade, tourism, and education.

Ghana’s Independence Day parade, which marks the country’s liberation from colonial rule in 1957, traditionally attracts foreign dignitaries and serves as a platform to reaffirm international partnerships and Pan-African solidarity.
