Minority calls for investigation into attack on UNIFIL base

Ranking Member on the Foreign Affairs Committee, Samuel A. Jinapor

The Minority in Parliament has denounced what it describes as a missile attack by Israeli forces on a facility belonging to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), an incident that reportedly left Ghanaian peacekeepers critically wounded. The caucus characterised the development as alarming and a grave breach of international norms.

They underscored that Ghana’s military personnel stationed in Lebanon are operating under a United Nations mandate and are not participants in the ongoing conflict in the area.

Speaking to journalists after deliberations, Ranking Member on the Foreign Affairs Committee, Samuel A. Jinapor, reiterated Ghana’s distinguished record in global peace support missions and its unwavering commitment to international stability.

According to the Minority, assaults on UN peacekeeping contingents erode the integrity of international conflict-resolution mechanisms and weaken the multilateral structures established to safeguard global security.

They pointed out that under international humanitarian law, peacekeepers are afforded protections similar to those granted to civilians, and any intentional strike against them amounts to a serious infraction of international legal standards.

Consequently, the caucus is demanding a thorough, impartial, and transparent probe into the incident to establish the facts.

They further appealed to the United Nations and appropriate international bodies to investigate the origins of the attack and ensure that accountability is pursued where responsibility is established.

In addition, the Minority called for enhanced security measures at UN peacekeeping sites in Lebanon and urged all actors involved in the conflict to adhere strictly to their legal obligations, particularly regarding the safety of UN staff and infrastructure.

The lawmakers also encouraged the Government of Ghana and the Ghana Armed Forces to maintain close coordination with UN authorities to guarantee robust protection for Ghanaian personnel serving in Lebanon and other volatile regions.
