The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAiMOS), in collaboration with the Blue Water Guards, carried out an extensive riverine patrol along the Ankobra River from Gwira Banso to Dominase as part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on illegal mining and safeguard the environment.

During the operation, the team observed a notable decline in galamsey activities at Gwira Banso compared to previous patrols, a development attributed to sustained enforcement actions and increased security presence in the area.

However, upon arrival at Dominase, operatives encountered suspicious activity along a section of the riverbank. Approximately twenty individuals reportedly fled into nearby bushes and the river upon sighting the taskforce, prompting a thorough inspection of the location.

Further reconnaissance revealed that the suspects were attempting to remobilise six changfan machines mounted on an abandoned floating platform, with the apparent intention of resuming illegal mining operations under the cover of darkness. Several makeshift washing platforms were also found being reconstructed to support renewed activities.

In line with operational protocols, the taskforce disabled and destroyed all six changfan machines, including those submerged in the river, and rendered the floating platform unusable to prevent future use.

Although no arrests were made, the operation dealt a significant blow to efforts by illegal miners to re-establish activities in the area.

NAiMOS and the Blue Water Guards have reaffirmed their commitment to intensifying patrols and surveillance along the Ankobra River to deter illegal mining and protect the ecological integrity of affected communities.
