Organised Labour to initiate talks with gov't on base pay and minimum wage adjustments
The Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL) has announced plans by Organised Labour to formally engage the government in negotiations over base pay and the national minimum wage, citing rising living costs and the need to improve workers’ welfare.
Secretary-General Abraham Koomson disclosed that Organised Labour will soon write to the government to begin discussions aimed at securing salary adjustments for workers across the country.
Speaking on Ahotor FM on April 11, Mr. Koomson stressed the urgency of the negotiations, noting that current economic conditions demand immediate intervention to cushion workers.
He also raised concerns about the government’s responsiveness to political pressure, urging authorities to ensure that decisions affecting workers are carefully considered and grounded in long-term economic stability.
Mr. Koomson further questioned the timing of the government’s recent decision to suspend certain taxes and margins on fuel for four weeks, describing the move as premature.
He warned that such actions could lead to revenue shortfalls and potentially affect the government’s ability to meet financial obligations, including salary negotiations.
“We do not want a situation where government will later claim there is no money when it is time to negotiate base pay and the national minimum wage,” he cautioned.
The GFL reiterated the importance of prudent fiscal management, emphasizing that sustainable economic policies are key to achieving meaningful outcomes in upcoming wage negotiations.
