Pastor Mensa Otabil, founder and leader of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), has reiterated his support for the construction of the National Cathedral, saying he remains eager to see the project completed.

Speaking at ICGC Christ Temple East in Teshie, Accra, during the church’s 2026 Greater Works programme, Pastor Otabil said Christians should not have opposed the project.

Despite withdrawing from the National Cathedral Board of Trustees in 2019, he said he still wanted the project to progress.

“We need to build massively to the glory of God,” he declared.

Pastor Otabil said Ghanaian Christians, who form the majority of the country’s population, should have looked beyond politics and supported the construction of the facility.

He criticised Christians for allowing political differences to influence their attitude towards the project.

“We are so small-minded, so small-minded that we allow politics to blind us. We allow politics to just crush our thinking,” he charged.

He also contrasted the approach of Christians with that of another religious group in Ghana, saying: “Others are building things all over.”

Ghana already has a National Mosque at Kanda in Accra, completed with financial support from Turkish partners and commissioned in 2021. A grand Islamic edifice is also being developed at East Legon, reportedly with Saudi support.
