About 2,300 victims of the June 29 flood in the Ayawaso Central Municipality have received relief items from the Municipal Assembly as authorities step up efforts to support affected households and prevent future disasters.

This was disclosed by the Municipal NADMO Director, Mohammed Awal, during the distribution of relief items to the residents.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Awal said the Assembly is rolling out support in phases to help victims “augment whatever they’ve lost”.

“We’ve done the first part. The second part, as and when we receive any relief items, we call on the people. They come and they take those things,” he said.

Items distributed so far include rice, cooking oil, blankets, mattresses, mosquito nets, mosquito repellents, and bottled water.

He noted that the support is targeting residents in the 12 electoral areas in the municipality that were deeply affected by the flood.

“So far, in estimation, we've attended to about almost 2,300 people. The initial estimation was 3,021 but the numbers keep compounding as we go to verify,” he added.

Beyond the relief, Mr. Awal said NADMO is working with the Assembly to dredge and desilt major drains in flood-prone areas including Alajo, IEDTs, and Kanda Jaja.

 “We are still working on the drains to make sure that if there's any rain, it can just pass away freely,” he stated.

To address trauma, the Director said the Assembly’s department of social welfare and the health directorate are on the ground providing education, counseling, and support for cleaning activities in affected communities. 

“We are on the ground assisting them, giving more assistance to them,” he assured.

Mr. Awal thanked residents for their cooperation and urged them to keep their environment clean to avoid a repeat of the June 29 devastation.

The June 29 flood displaced several households and destroyed property across parts of Ayawaso Central, prompting emergency response from the Assembly and NADMO.
