Parliament approves Justice Baffoe-Bonnie as new Chief Justice of Ghana
Parliament has approved Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as the next Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana.
His approval followed a unanimous endorsement by the Appointments Committee after a successful vetting process earlier this week.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, who currently serves as a Justice of the Supreme Court, will succeed Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo upon her suspension.
During his vetting, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie pledged to uphold the independence of the judiciary, strengthen public confidence in the justice system, and ensure the timely delivery of justice across all courts.
He also emphasised the need to leverage technology to enhance efficiency within the judiciary and to expand access to justice, particularly for vulnerable groups.
The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin commended the nominee’s exemplary service and integrity, describing him as a “distinguished jurist with a deep commitment to justice and the rule of law.”
He cautioned him to take lessons from his vetting and his subsequent approval by Parliament to guide this work as Chief Justice
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s appointment now awaits formal swearing-in by President John Dramani Mahama in the coming days.
