The Presidential Advisor on the 24-hour Economy, Goosie Tanoh, has clarified that the 24-hour Economy Secretariat has no jurisdiction over the proposed 24-hour markets.

Speaking at an engagement with news editors in Accra, he said the initiative falls under the Ministry of Local Government and the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

According to Mr Tanoh, the 24-hour market system has been promised to 262 district assemblies, with financing from the District Assemblies Common Fund and implementation by the Ministry of Local Government and the district assemblies.

“Although they use a 24-hour logo, we have no jurisdictional control over the markets, we are not part of deciding where it goes and so on and so forth,” he said.

He said the secretariat had been sued “four or five times” over matters for which it had no responsibility.

Mr Tanoh said the secretariat’s lawyer was preparing to file a motion in November to have it removed from the list of defendants because it had no jurisdiction over the matter.

“That’s a problem the Ministry of Local Government is handling,” he added.
