President John Dramani Mahama has formally requested that the Majority Leader and the Majority Chief Whip in Parliament withdraw the Private Member’s Bill seeking the repeal of the Act establishing the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

This request follows the president’s public reaffirmation of his commitment to strengthening the OSP as an essential institution in the fight against corruption, a position he reiterated during a meeting with the Peace Council yesterday, Wednesday, December 10, 2025.

The president further emphasised the need for the OSP to enhance public confidence in its work and confront corruption decisively, in line with the purpose for which the office was originally established.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) was established under the administration of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as a key institution in Ghana’s anti-corruption architecture.

The office is currently headed by Kissi Agyebeng, Esq., who has faced widespread public criticism over perceived shortcomings in prosecuting alleged corrupt public officials. His predecessor, Martin Amidu, Esq., encountered similar challenges, including what he described as interference from heads of state institutions and persistent constraints related to inadequate funding and resources.

Expectations for the OSP remain high, particularly in light of President Mahama’s renewed anti-corruption agenda, Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL). The initiative is focused on tracing, recovering, and safeguarding state funds and assets reportedly misappropriated by past public officials, making the effectiveness of the OSP central to its success.
