The President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), Efua Ghartey, has called on lawyers and judges to exercise their authority with humility, fairness, and integrity, stressing the importance of maintaining public trust in the legal system.

She made the remarks at the Supreme Court at 150 celebration held at the University of Ghana on Thursday, April 16, 2026. The event brought together members of the bench, bar, and academia to reflect on the development and future of Ghana’s justice system.

Speaking on the theme “Honouring the past, celebrating the present and defining the future,” Ghartey described the legal profession as a “hallowed position” that carries significant responsibility.

“We find ourselves in a hallowed position; a position of immense power and influence. May we be humbled by this and dispense justice to all men and women without fear or ill will,” she said.

She noted that although the legal profession offers privilege, it also requires strong accountability and ethical conduct. She urged lawyers and judges to uphold justice, equality before the law, and impartiality, saying public confidence in the judiciary depends on their conduct.

“The credibility of the justice system rests on our shoulders,” she added, calling for justice to be delivered “without fear or favour.”

Her comments come amid ongoing discussions about judicial accountability and the role of legal professionals in strengthening democratic governance in Ghana.
