Tidal waves displace over 80 residents after destroying homes in Moree
More than 80 residents have been displaced after powerful tidal waves swept through the coastal community of Moree in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese District of the Central Region, destroying at least 13 houses.
The National Disaster Management Organisation says the incident occurred around 3:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 17, following strong sea surges that caused extensive damage to homes and property within the community.
In a statement, the Central Regional Directorate of NADMO confirmed that no deaths or injuries were recorded despite the scale of destruction.
According to the agency, emergency teams received distress reports from the area after several buildings collapsed and livelihoods were affected by the tidal waves.
Personnel from NADMO, Ghana Police Service, National Security and the District Assembly were subsequently deployed to the community to support rescue and safety operations.
The response teams also carried out preliminary assessments and arranged temporary shelter for residents affected by the disaster.
NADMO warned that sea conditions in the area remain dangerous and advised residents to remain alert while authorities continue monitoring the situation.
The organisation further expressed sympathy to affected families and assured them of continued support as relief operations intensify.
The latest incident has once again drawn attention to the persistent threat of coastal erosion and tidal waves affecting several communities along Ghana’s coastline, particularly in the Central Region.
Local authorities and disaster management officials are renewing calls for long-term coastal protection measures and sustained public awareness campaigns to reduce the impact of future disasters.
Further assessments are expected in the coming days as authorities determine the full extent of the destruction.
