PAC calls for closure of livestock market near National Mosque over sanitation concerns

The Public Accounts Committee has appealed to the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council to urgently relocate or shut down the expanding livestock market operating around Kanda near the National Mosque.

The Committee says the increasing trade in cattle, goats and other livestock within the area is raising serious concerns about sanitation, congestion and the overall planning of the capital city.

According to members of the Committee, the market has grown considerably over the years and is beginning to negatively affect the image and orderly development of Accra.

The Committee believes immediate intervention is needed to prevent further environmental and urban planning challenges in the area.

Speaking in an interview, Vice Chairman of the Committee and Member of Parliament for Mpraeso, Davis Opoku Ansah, described the situation as disturbing and criticised what he termed inadequate efforts to regulate the growing livestock business.

Mr. Opoku Ansah noted that the activity initially started on a smaller scale but has expanded rapidly in recent years.

The Committee is therefore urging city authorities and the regional administration to take swift action to restore order and protect the long-term development plans of the capital.
