The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has pledged swift intervention against any form of intimidation or harassment of journalists by state institutions in the region.

In a speech read on his behalf by Josephine Dake-Abrahams, the Public Relations Officer for the Volta Regional Coordinating Council, at the 2026 World Press Freedom Day commemoration held at the Volta Press Centre, the Minister assured media practitioners that his office would respond within 48 hours to verified complaints of harassment.

“This government will not use the police, the courts, or any state agency to harass journalists,” he stated. “Any media professional who can demonstrate state intimidation in the Volta Region should report directly to my office, and I will act within 48 hours."

Gunu emphasised that a free, independent, and pluralistic press remains essential to democratic governance, accountability, and peacebuilding. According to him, the government considers journalists as partners in national development and is committed to strengthening media freedom through institutional reforms.

He disclosed that government is reviewing Chapter 12 of the 1992 Constitution to further enhance media freedom and also plans to decentralise the National Media Commission through the establishment of Regional Complaints Settlement Offices across all 16 regions.

The Minister further urged journalists to uphold professionalism by prioritising accuracy over speed, avoiding hate speech, and amplifying marginalised voices.

“Peace is not just the absence of conflict; it is built on informed citizens, accountable leadership, and responsible journalism,” he added.

The event, organised under the theme “Shaping a Future at Peace,” brought together journalists, government officials, and civil society actors to reflect on the role of the media in promoting national cohesion and democratic governance.
