“We do not agree with the 25% fee increment, whether by the SRC or GRASAG”- Dr. Apaak
The Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Clement Apaak, has opposed reports of a 25 percent rise in academic charges at the University of Ghana and has called for urgent consultations with all relevant parties.
In an interview on Monday, January 5, Dr. Apaak made it clear that the Ministry does not endorse any increase in fees, regardless of whether it originates from university management or student representative groups. He emphasized that any proposed adjustment must go through thorough discussions and should not place an unfair burden on students. He added that special consideration must be given to students who are still adjusting to their academic programmes at the university.
According to him, the Ministry has not granted approval for any upward review of fees and expects all charges to remain unchanged. He further instructed that payments already made based on the reported increment should be refunded until the necessary approvals and regulatory requirements are met.
Dr. Apaak also asked the University of Ghana to provide proof that it has fully adhered to guidelines on fees issued by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).
