The government has approved the emergency evacuation of 300 Ghanaians living in South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks in parts of the country.

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced that President John Dramani Mahama had authorised the evacuation exercise to ensure the safety of affected Ghanaian nationals.

According to the Foreign Affairs Minister, the individuals to be evacuated had already registered with Ghana’s High Commission in Pretoria after responding to an earlier advisory issued by the ministry.

Mr Ablakwa explained that the evacuation forms part of government’s efforts to rescue and support Ghanaians caught up in the latest wave of violence targeting foreign nationals in South Africa.

He assured citizens that the government remains committed to protecting the welfare and security of Ghanaians both within the country and abroad.

The development comes amid renewed concerns over xenophobic attacks in South Africa, where foreign nationals and businesses owned by African migrants have reportedly come under attack in some communities.
