The former Managing Director of GIHOC Distilleries Company Limited, Maxwell Kofi Jumah, has been released from the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after meeting revised bail conditions.

His release follows ongoing investigations into alleged financial improprieties and breaches of public financial management regulations during his tenure at the state-owned company.

Mr Jumah was arrested on April 29, 2026, following an EOCO search operation at his residence in Kumasi. Shortly after his arrest, he was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital due to a health complication while in custody.

His release came after his legal team successfully challenged the initial bail terms in court. Speaking in an interview with Citi FM on Monday, May 18, his counsel, Nanabanyin Ackon, confirmed that the original GH¢55 million bail condition was reduced to GH¢30 million.

“The next day, when EOCO imposed those conditions on him, we went to court, and the court reviewed the bail application. The GH¢55 million bail condition was reduced to GH¢30 million. He was able to get sureties, and he fulfilled the bail conditions. He left the hospital and went home,” Mr. Ackon stated.

Under the new terms, Mr. Jumah is required to report to EOCO once every month.

“As we speak, he’s home. As part of the bail conditions, he was to report once a month. We’re available to cooperate with investigations; any information they want, we will give it to them,” his lawyer added.

GIHOC Distilleries Company Limited is a major state-owned manufacturer of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages in Ghana.

This case forms part of a broader, intensified effort by state anti-corruption and financial crime agencies, including EOCO, to investigate procurement breaches, financial crimes, and the alleged mismanagement of public resources by former public officials.
