John Dumelo spotted enjoying childhood 'Asanaa' drink in Abelemkpe

The Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture and Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon in the Greater Accra Region, John Dumelo, has sparked conversation on social media after sharing a nostalgic moment involving one of his childhood favourite local drinks.

Mr. Dumelo was spotted enjoying “Asanaa,” a popular traditional Ghanaian beverage made from water, fermented maize and molasses, during a stop in Abelemkpe in Accra.

The drink, which is usually served chilled in slim plastic sachets and consumed with a straw, remains a favourite street beverage in many parts of the capital. But usually sold in Gourge and drank in a Calabash in the early days.

Sharing the moment on his Facebook page, the Deputy Minister wrote: “Spotted my fav drink in Abelemkpe opposite the mosque.

What do you call it in your language?”

His post quickly attracted reactions from followers, many of whom joined the conversation by sharing the various local names used to describe the drink in different Ghanaian languages.

The post also triggered nostalgia among social media users, with several people reminiscing about growing up drinking 'Asanaa' and other traditional local beverages sold on the streets of Accra.

Mr. Dumelo’s interaction has since generated widespread engagement online, celebrating Ghanaian street culture and local delicacies.
