N/R: Police arrest 77 suspects in Tamale and Savelugu anti-drug operation
The Northern Regional Police Command has arrested 77 suspects during a special anti-drug operation conducted within the Tamale Metropolis and the Savelugu Municipality.
The operation, carried out on Monday, March 23, 2026, at around 9:30 PM, involved 33 personnel from the Police Special Operations Team, Red Maria. It forms part of ongoing efforts by the Ghana Police Service to combat drug peddling and related criminal activities in the region.
According to the police, the operation initially targeted several locations in Lamashegu identified as hotspots for drug-related activity, resulting in the arrest of one suspect.
The team then moved to the Aboabo market area, where another suspect was apprehended in possession of a powdered substance suspected to be cocaine.

Following further intelligence, an alleged supplier was arrested at NOBISCO; however, no incriminating items were found during a search of his residence.
The operation was subsequently extended to Savelugu, where a major raid was conducted at a known drug peddling spot, leading to the arrest of 74 additional suspects.
Exhibits recovered during the operation include seven motorbikes, one Toyota Camry vehicle, quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, and 10 sachets of Tramadol.
All suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting with investigations.
The Police stated that those found culpable will be arraigned before the courts.
The Northern Regional Police Command reiterated its commitment to combating drug-related offences and ensuring public safety, calling on the general public to provide timely and credible information to support law enforcement efforts.
