Police arrest 7 suspects in fake electronic traffic violation scam
The Police Intelligence Directorate has apprehended seven individuals in connection with a fraudulent electronic traffic violation scheme targeting unsuspecting members of the public.
Martha Quarshie, Peter Ofori McCarthy, Robert Akplehe, Christian Akplehe, Alfred Kofi Totimeh, Michael Edem Amemornu, and Prosper Otumfour, the suspects, were arrested from hideouts in Ada and Winneba.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the group set up an online application and sent fake electronic traffic violation notices, directing victims to pay fines through a provided link.
Suspect Prosper Otumfour reportedly registered multiple Telecel cash SIM cards in the names of family members and associates, but retained control of them to collect payments, which were later distributed among accomplices.
Authorities recovered approximately GHS10,978 in cash, along with laptops, hard drives, mobile phones, multiple SIM cards, bank cards, and identification documents from the suspects.
The Police Intelligence Directorate has urged the public to remain vigilant and report any fraudulent electronic traffic violation messages to the police for investigation.
