Black Maria is a Ghana Police Service Special Operations Team

The Northern Regional Police Command has firmly denied claims that the service's Special Operations Team, popularly known as Black Maria, was involved in the alleged assault of renowned Ghanaian visual artist, Ibrahim Mahama, in Tamale, Northern Region.

In a statement addressing reports circulating in sections of the media, the command described the claims as false, clarifying that the Special Operations Team had already been withdrawn from the Northern Region prior to the incident.

According to police, the team was redeployed on March 5, 2026, following a directive by the Inspector-General of Police (iGP) Christian Tetteh-Yohuno, and therefore, could not have been involved in the alleged assault.

Despite the rebuttal, the Northern Regional Police Command confirmed that investigations are ongoing into the reported assault, which allegedly involved some police officers in Tamale.

The command assured the public that it remains committed to a transparent investigative process and will provide updates as developments unfold.

The case has attracted public interest, with the police reiterating their readiness to address misinformation while ensuring accountability in the ongoing probe.
