The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Abirem Constituency in the Eastern Region, Charles Asuako Owiredu, has launched a scholarship scheme with a seed capital of GH¢500,000 to support brilliant but needy students in the constituency.

Speaking at the launch, Mr Owiredu said education remains a critical tool for transforming lives and promoting the development of communities.

He stressed that no brilliant student should be denied the opportunity to further their education because of financial constraints.

According to the MP, the scholarship scheme will particularly benefit students pursuing tertiary education and help create opportunities for young people to acquire the skills and knowledge needed to contribute meaningfully to the development of the constituency.

Mr Owiredu further noted that keeping young people in school could help address some social challenges, including teenage pregnancy, by giving them the opportunity to focus on their education and future careers.

He appealed to corporate institutions, non-governmental organizations, philanthropists and other stakeholders to support the initiative to enable more students to benefit from the scheme.

The Birim North District Director of Education and some beneficiaries of the scholarship scheme commended the MP for the intervention.

They said the initiative would ease the financial burden on parents and students while encouraging more young people in the constituency to pursue higher education.

The beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the Member of Parliament for investing in the future of the youth and pledged to make good use of the opportunity.
