GIA moves to build capacity and public trust as CEO urges industry to take 'frontal role'
The Ghana Insurers Association (GIA) has begun a 3-day International Educational Seminar aimed at building the capacity of members to respond better to clients, especially in times of disaster.
Speaking at the opening, Ernest Frimpong, Chief Executive Officer of Bedrock Insurance Limited and Chairman of the GIA Public Relations and External Liaison Committee, said the seminar is critical to repositioning the industry in the eyes of the public.
“Today we are here for three days of international educational seminar that we are organising for our members to be able to build their capacity to be able to respond adequately to clients,” he said.
Mr. Frimpong noted that many Ghanaians are often confused about what to do when disaster strikes, referencing the recent flood incidents in parts of the country.
“When people go through certain challenges in terms of even the recent flood incident that happened, they are left sometimes in the dark. They don't even know what to do to be able to claim effectively and efficiently,” he explained.
According to the GIA PR Chair, the discussions over the next three days are designed to bring the insurance industry to the forefront.
“So we are here discussing issues which will bring us to the forefront as an industry, so that we become more visible. People will trust us as insurance industry to be able to insure,” he said.
He added that the goal is to eliminate negative perceptions and assure the public that insurers are ready to deliver.
“...and that we will be able to pay their claims promptly and even assist them to make claims where it's needed. So basically we want to be able to play a more significant and frontal role in the financial services sector.”
The seminar is expected to cover technical areas including claims handling, customer education, and industry conduct — all geared toward improving service delivery and public confidence in insurance.
The GIA has described the 4th International Educational Seminar as part of its broader strategy to make insurance more accessible, trusted, and relevant to ordinary Ghanaians and businesses.
