MPs call for stricter safety measures after fatal Tema aircraft crash
The Majority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for South Dayi Constituency in the Volta Region, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has called on operators of microlight aircraft to strictly adhere to maintenance and safety standards following a fatal crash in Tema that claimed two lives.
Presenting a statement in Parliament, Mr Dafeamekpor stressed the need for enhanced compliance with aviation safety protocols to prevent similar incidents.
He also urged the Ghana Air Force to collaborate with private aircraft owners to strengthen safety measures and safeguard lives.
He described the incident as tragic, noting that it has deeply affected the bereaved family and all those impacted.
Meanwhile, the Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu Constituency in the Central Region, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has called for a transparent and time-bound investigation into the crash.
He urged authorities to make the findings of the probe public and to review and strengthen aviation safety regulations.
Mr Afenyo-Markin also raised concerns about what he described as a growing number of aircraft-related incidents, questioning how a private aircraft was allowed to operate over a densely populated area.
He further called for adequate support for the families of the victims.
The incident has sparked renewed debate over aviation safety standards and regulatory enforcement in Ghana, with lawmakers pushing for stricter oversight to prevent future tragedies.
