C/R: MP facilitates free cataract surgeries, pushes for completion of Agenda 111 hospital in Diaso

The Member of Parliament for Upper Denkyira West, Rudolf Amoako Gyampah, has intervened to address growing healthcare challenges in the Denkyira East and West Districts of the Central Region by facilitating free cataract surgeries for affected residents.

The intervention follows concerns over limited access to healthcare in the area, where the absence of health facilities and specialists has left many residents struggling with untreated conditions, including severe eye infections that have led to blindness.

Recent screenings of over 6,000 people revealed widespread eye-related conditions, with 1,000 individuals diagnosed with various stages of cataract. In response, the MP’s initiative is aimed at restoring sight and improving the quality of life for those affected.

Residents in the area often travel long distances to access healthcare, either to Bibiani in the Western North Region or to Cape Coast, the Central Regional capital. However, high transportation costs and financial constraints discourage many, especially low-income earners, from seeking early treatment, resulting in complications.

While some cataract cases are congenital, many are linked to ageing. Health experts continue to encourage early medical intervention to prevent avoidable blindness.

Speaking to Class News, Mr Gyampah expressed concern over the lack of specialists in the district, noting that it contributes to delays in accessing care. He therefore urged government to complete and operationalise the Agenda 111 hospital project located in Diaso, which he believes will significantly improve healthcare delivery in the area.
