Health Minister announces completion of 13,500 nurses and midwife recruitment
Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has announced that government has completed the recruitment of 13,500 nurses and midwives, marking a major step in efforts to stabilise the country’s health workforce.
He disclosed that all newly engaged personnel who experienced salary delays would receive their payments by the end of the month of November 2025.
In a speech read at the GRNMA 19th Biennial Conference in Tamale, the minister said the move was part of a broader strategy to strengthen frontline healthcare delivery, especially under the Free Primary Healthcare and Mahama Cares programmes, noting that nurses and midwives remained central to the success of these reforms.
The minister also highlighted government’s consideration of the negotiated Conditions of Service for inclusion in the 2026 Budget, describing it as a demonstration of commitment to improving the welfare of health workers.
He further announced that promotions for nurses and midwives had now been regularised, eliminating delays previously caused by limited vacancies.
Akandoh urged continuous collaboration between the ministry, labour institutions, and the GRNMA to address deployment, specialist training, and overall workforce stability, stressing that strong partnerships remained essential to advancing quality healthcare across the country.
