Minister Jinapor calls on Africa to lead global clean energy transition at REFA 2025
Addressing policymakers and investors at the 3rd Renewable Energy Forum Africa (REFA 2025) in Accra, Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, urged African nations to seize the moment and take the lead in the global shift toward clean energy.
Highlighting the continent’s growing climate vulnerabilities, he warned that Africa faces a critical choice in the coming years.
“We stand at history’s crossroads—Africa must lead in clean energy. Without bold action, we will perpetuate inequality,” he said, echoing sentiments recently expressed by Kenyan President William Ruto.
The Minister emphasised that Africa’s green transition is not only an environmental necessity but also a major economic opportunity.
“Africa’s green transition is both an environmental imperative and an opportunity for economic transformation, job creation, and sustainable growth,” he noted.
Mr. Jinapor called for unity and strengthened partnerships across governments, industries, and communities to ensure the continent takes command of its renewable energy future.
“By fostering bold leadership and innovative partnerships, we can turn the tide on energy poverty and climate vulnerability,” he said.
He concluded with a powerful call to action, quoting a Somali proverb: “Poverty is slavery. Let renewables set us free.
The time is now. Together, let us lead with ambition and determination to propel Africa into a new era where energy empowers people and economies thrive sustainably.”
The address underscored Ghana’s commitment to championing renewable energy initiatives on the continent while urging Africa to leverage its natural resources for economic growth and climate resilience.
