The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour, Mr Abraham Koomson, has called on the United Nations to take urgent action to restore peace in the Middle East following a missile attack on a Ghanaian peace-keeping position in southern Lebanon.

The attack, confirmed by the Ghana Armed Forces, occurred on Friday evening when the Ghanaian Battalion Headquarters serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) came under two missile strikes between 17:45 and 17:52 local time.

According to reports, several soldiers were critically injured in the incident.

Speaking on Accra-based Ahotor FM on Saturday, March 7, Mr. Koomson described the attack as catastrophic and expressed deep concern about the safety of Ghanaian peace-keepers deployed in conflict zones.

He urged the United Nations to take decisive steps to prevent further escalation of violence in the region.

Mr. Koomson also questioned what he described as the inaction and seeming ineffectiveness of the global body, which is mandated to intervene in major international conflicts.

According to him, the growing tensions in the Middle East could escalate into a global conflict if urgent measures are not taken.

He therefore called on the United Nations to take stronger action against parties responsible for attacks on peace-keeping forces.

“This situation is worrying, and the United Nations must act now.

Ghana alone cannot solve the problem. The UN must crack the whip on those responsible,” he said.

The attack comes amid rising tensions in the Middle East involving the Israel Defence Forces, Hezbollah and their regional allies, including Iran.

Southern Lebanon has become increasingly volatile in recent months due to ongoing exchanges of fire between Israeli forces and the Iran-backed Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

Meanwhile, the Government of Ghana has raised the incident at the United Nations through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, calling for stronger protection measures for peacekeepers operating in conflict zones.
