The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has directed that disciplinary action be taken against several health professionals following the submission of a report investigating the death of 29-year-old engineer Charles Amissah.

The three-member committee, chaired by Agyeman Badu Akosa, concluded that the death was avoidable and cited serious lapses in emergency response and professional judgment.

Charles Amissah died in transit following a hit-and-run incident in Accra after he was allegedly denied care at multiple facilities due to a lack of available beds.

The committee's findings highlighted inadequate training of ambulance personnel and poor decision-making by staff at the Police Hospital, Greater Accra Regional Hospital, and Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

Specific individuals named in the report for failing to provide care at critical moments include Dr. Anne Marie Kuduwa, Dr Nina Naomi Adotevi, Dr Ida Drunt, and Dr Genevieve Ajah. Nurses Ms B. Turkson, Ms Joy Daisy Nelson, and Ms Salamatu Alhassan Adu were also cited.

Minister Akandoh has instructed the Chief Director of the Ministry of Health to formally notify the relevant institutions and regulatory bodies, including the Medical and Dental Council and the Nursing and Midwifery Council, to begin disciplinary proceedings.

Speaking on Wednesday, May 6, the minister confirmed that the full report will be made public and that its recommendations will be implemented to prevent future avoidable deaths.

He noted that while some facilities have initiated internal disciplinary measures, regulators must act swiftly in accordance with their mandates to reform emergency healthcare delivery.
