President John Dramani Mahama has officially launched Ghana’s first electronic visa platform, introducing a major digital overhaul of the country’s immigration and travel processing system.

The new online portal allows travellers to apply for visas, make payments and receive approvals electronically without the need to physically visit Ghanaian embassies or consulates.

Speaking at the launch event on Monday, May 25, 2026, President Mahama announced that African passport holders travelling to Ghana for business purposes will now process their visas solely through the digital platform and will be exempt from visa fees.

He further declared an end to the country’s previous visa-on-arrival arrangement, explaining that the new system is intended to improve efficiency, convenience and security within Ghana’s immigration framework.

According to the President, the initiative forms part of a broader vision to strengthen continental integration and reconnect Africans and people of African descent with Ghana.

President Mahama revealed that government intends to eventually introduce a policy that would allow people of African ancestry around the world to travel to Ghana without paying visa fees.

He disclosed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration and the Ministry of the Interior have been tasked to develop the framework required to implement the vision.

Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, described the e-visa portal as a transformative step aimed at eliminating bureaucratic delays and making Ghana more attractive to investors and tourists.

According to him, the system replaces outdated processes with a faster and more convenient experience for travellers while strengthening confidence in Ghana’s immigration services.

Mr. Muntaka also stressed that the digital platform would reinforce national security through enhanced screening and smarter border management measures.

Meanwhile, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, assured prospective travellers that visa applications submitted through the portal would be processed within 48 hours once all required documents are provided.

He said the new system is expected to significantly reduce delays and improve efficiency in Ghana’s visa processing regime.
