KGL Foundation renovates Accra Psychiatric Hospital OPD to enhance mental healthcare delivery
The KGL Foundation has completed the renovation of the Out-Patient Department (OPD) Centre of the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, in a move aimed at improving mental healthcare delivery and enhancing the experience of patients seeking treatment.
The refurbished facility was officially commissioned last Thursday as part of the Foundation's broader commitment to supporting healthcare and creating a more dignified, welcoming and patient-friendly environment for mental health services in Ghana.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Chief Executive Officer of the KGL Foundation, Elliot Dadey, said the project was driven by a desire to make a meaningful contribution to the country's mental health sector while encouraging greater investment in mental healthcare infrastructure.
He noted that the physical condition of healthcare facilities plays a critical role in the treatment, recovery and overall well-being of patients.
Mr. Dadey expressed confidence that the upgraded OPD centre would provide a more conducive environment for both patients and healthcare professionals, ultimately improving the quality of care delivered at the hospital.
Call for Greater Support for Mental Health
The KGL Foundation CEO stressed that mental health remains a vital component of national development and called on corporate organisations and philanthropic institutions to support initiatives aimed at strengthening mental healthcare services across the country.
He reaffirmed the Foundation's commitment to implementing projects that improve the lives of vulnerable groups and contribute to national development.
Hospital Management Applauds Initiative
The Director of the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, Kwadwo Marfo Obeng, commended the Foundation for the intervention, describing the renovation as a significant transformation that has improved both the hospital's image and operational environment.
According to him, the refurbished OPD centre has enhanced safety and comfort within consulting rooms while creating a more welcoming atmosphere for patients, visitors and healthcare workers.
Dr. Obeng further noted that the facelift is helping to reduce the stigma often associated with mental health treatment by making the facility more attractive and accessible to the public.
"The improvement in the physical environment is encouraging more people to seek professional mental health support and helping to change public perceptions about psychiatric care," he said.
Stakeholders Attend Commissioning
The commissioning ceremony brought together key stakeholders in Ghana's mental health sector, including Eugene Dordoye, Clinical Coordinator Dr. Susan Seffah, Head of Public Relations and Deputy Clinical Coordinator Dr. Peggy Asiedu Ekremet, Director of Administration at the Mental Health Authority Mr. Victus Kpesese, and Deputy Director Mr. Emmanuel Hanson Torde.
The renovation is expected to significantly improve service delivery, patient experience and public confidence in mental healthcare services, while supporting ongoing efforts to promote mental wellness and reduce stigma across the country.
