NLC declares KADA strike illegal, orders doctors back to work
The National Labour Commission (NLC) has declared the indefinite strike action by the Komfo Anokye Doctors' Association (KADA) illegal and directed its members to immediately return to work.
In a summons issued on June 6, 2026, the Commission stated that KADA's notice of strike contravened Sections 162 and 163 of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), indicating that the association failed to comply with the procedures required under the law.
The strike was announced following an emergency meeting held by KADA on June 5, 2026, in protest against disciplinary action taken against the Chief Executive Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
The dispute stems from measures introduced by hospital management to address severe congestion at the facility's Emergency Department, including the temporary suspension of new emergency admissions and coordination with nearby health facilities.
KADA has maintained that the CEO's actions were necessary to protect patient safety and prevent avoidable loss of life amid serious capacity constraints at the hospital.
The NLC, however, invoked its powers under Section 139(d) of the Labour Act and ordered the doctors to call off the strike with immediate effect. The Commission warned that failure to comply could attract further legal consequences.
As part of efforts to resolve the matter, the NLC has summoned representatives of KADA and the relevant authorities to appear before it on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at 2:00 PM for discussions aimed at finding a resolution to the dispute.
