'16 NPP members arrested': Oppong Nkrumah accuses gov't of using arrests to silence opposition voices
Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has accused the governing National Democratic Congress administration of using arrests and detentions to suppress opposition voices critical of the government on social media.
The Ofoase-Ayirebi MP and former Information Minister claimed that more than 16 members of the opposition New Patriotic Party have been arrested since the government assumed office.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Midday News on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, Oppong Nkrumah alleged that the arrests were linked to comments made online.
“Over sixteen NPP persons have been arrested for simply making comments on social media or posting things on social media that the government finds unpalatable,” he said.
His comments come amid the continued detention of Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, the NPP’s Bono Regional Chairman.
According to Oppong Nkrumah, Abronye’s lawyers, family members and political associates have been denied access to him since his arrest last week.
“In the case of Kwame Baffoe Abronye, he was earlier arrested, denied bail... and now, Abronye has been detained from last Wednesday till today as I am speaking to you,” he stated.
The MP further accused the government of using the judicial process to intimidate critics and suppress dissent.
“The government is using arrest, detention, remand as a tool to suppress voices that they do not feel comfortable with,” he alleged.
“The whole idea is to intimidate people and ensure that everybody keeps quiet when they are failing on delivering on the promises they made to the Ghanaian people.”
Oppong Nkrumah also indicated that the NPP would continue to challenge the arrests both publicly and through the courts.
“We will use the platforms of public advocacy to call that out as well while we do what is necessary through the judicial system,” he concluded.
