Energy Minister refutes claim over payment to Pwalugu Dam contractor

Dr John Jinapor

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has dismissed as false reports suggesting that a contractor for the Pwalugu Dam project was not paid.

In a statement, the Minister described a publication circulating on social media with the headline “Pwalugu Dam contractor was not paid – Energy Minister reveals” as misleading and a misrepresentation of his remarks before Parliament’s Government Assurances Committee.

According to him, the proceedings of the Committee were broadcast live, and at no point did he state that the contractor had not been paid.

Mr Jinapor clarified that he had informed the Committee that the contractor was paid but failed to execute the work and subsequently absconded with the funds.

He added that the matter is currently under investigation and has been referred to the Attorney-General’s Department for legal advice and possible prosecution.

The Minister further explained that in response to a follow-up question from the Committee Chairman, he reiterated that the contractor was not paid for any work done, maintaining consistency in his position.

He criticised attempts to distort the facts, warning that such misinformation undermines public confidence and responsible discourse on critical national issues.

Mr Jinapor urged the public to disregard the publication and called on media practitioners to verify information from credible and official sources before dissemination.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transparency, accountability and integrity in the handling of public matters.
