The District Chief Executive(DCE) for Kwahu East, Samuel Asamoah, has issued a strong warning to fishermen engaged in illegal fishing practices, calling for strict enforcement of regulations to protect aquatic life and restore order in the area.

The warning follows growing concerns over illegal fishing activities at Kwahu Kotoso, where the use of unapproved fishing nets and harmful substances, including poison, has been reported.

Addressing fisherfolk during a meeting in the community, Mr Asamoah described the practices as dangerous and unlawful, noting that they have contributed to the depletion of fish stocks and heightened tensions among fishermen.

He revealed that the situation has led to violent clashes within the fishing community, resulting in the loss of one life in recent times.

The DCE urged fishermen to adhere strictly to fishing regulations and called on law enforcement agencies to intensify monitoring and enforcement to curb the illegal activities.

He cautioned that individuals found flouting the law would face sanctions, stressing that discipline within the fishing sector is essential to maintaining peace and sustainability.

Meanwhile, the District Director of Agriculture has proposed the introduction of a closed fishing season as a long-term measure to allow fish stocks to recover and improve yields.

Authorities remain optimistic that with stronger enforcement and cooperation from stakeholders, illegal fishing in the district can be effectively addressed
