Finance Minister paid nearly GHS10 billion in contractor arrears in December — Agbodza
The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has disclosed that the Finance Minister paid close to GHS10 billion in arrears owed to contractors in December 2025.
Speaking on the state of road infrastructure financing, Mr. Agbodza said the payment was part of the government’s efforts to clear outstanding obligations to contractors and revive stalled projects across the country.
According to him, the accumulation of arrears had significantly slowed down road construction and maintenance works, creating financial strain for contractors and affecting job delivery within the sector.
“The Finance Minister has paid close to GHS10 billion as arrears owed to contractors in December last year,” Mr. Agbodza stated, describing the move as a critical intervention to restore confidence in the construction industry.
He noted that the clearance of the arrears has begun to ease pressure on contractors, enabling some to return to the site and resume work on abandoned or delayed road projects.
Mr. Agbodza added that the government remains committed to improving road infrastructure nationwide but stressed the need for prudent financial management to prevent a recurrence of large arrears in the future.
According to him, the payment forms part of broader fiscal measures aimed at stabilising the economy, supporting local businesses, and accelerating infrastructure development.
