Ghana extends ‘Operation Boafo,’ donates equipment to support Jamaica’s post-hurricane recovery
Ghana has made an additional donation of relief and construction equipment to Jamaica as part of efforts to support the Caribbean nation’s recovery following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa.
The donation, made on the instructions of President John Dramani Mahama, includes construction equipment, air-conditioned tents, boats, outboard motors, medical supplies, water purifiers, as well as plumbing and electrical tools to aid reconstruction and humanitarian efforts.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto-Ablakwa, Deputy Minister for Defence, Brobya Genfi, joined by Ghana's Special Envoy to the Caribbean, Kwasi Kyei Darkwah, made the donation on behalf of the President of Ghana. Receiving the donation, Jamaica’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Honourable Kamina Abena Johnson Smith, JP, received the items on behalf of the Jamaican government and expressed appreciation for Ghana’s continued support.
In addition to the material assistance, Ghana has approved a request by the Jamaican government to extend “Operation Boafo,” Ghana’s emergency support mission, from an initial 30 days to 90 days.
The extension was granted by President Mahama in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief.
The move underscores a broader shift in Ghana’s foreign policy orientation, with the government emphasising solidarity and shared responsibility in international relations.
According to Mr Ablakwa, Ghana’s diplomacy will increasingly be guided by a commitment to support partners in times of need rather than a focus on what the country can gain from others
