Labour unionist criticises Minority for ‘opposing government decisions for political reasons’
The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour, Mr Abraham Koomson, has criticised the Minority in Parliament for what he describes as a tendency to oppose government policies simply because they are in opposition.
According to him, the role of the Minority should not be limited to rejecting every policy initiative introduced by the government.
Speaking on Accra-based Ahotor FM on Saturday, March 7, Mr. Koomson warned that the Minority risks losing credibility if it continues to oppose government decisions without offering constructive alternatives.
He stressed that being in opposition should not be interpreted as a licence to automatically reject policies put forward by the government.
Mr. Koomson cited the recent debate over the reduction in the cocoa producer price as an example of what he believes is politically motivated criticism.
On February 12, the government announced a reduction in the cocoa producer price to GHS41,392 per tonne, equivalent to GHS2,587 per bag, for the remainder of the 2025/2026 crop season.
The decision was approved by the Producer Price Review Committee.
Following the announcement, the Minority in Parliament indicated plans to compel the Finance Minister, Cassiel Ato Forson, to appear before the House to address what it described as worsening challenges in the cocoa sector.
The Minority has argued that the revised pricing structure could negatively affect cocoa farmers and further strain livelihoods within the industry.
However, Mr. Koomson dismissed the concerns, insisting that the reaction from the Minority lacks merit.
According to him, the issue has been unnecessarily politicised, with some members of the opposition using it as an opportunity to revive what he described as their “dwindling political fortunes.”
He therefore urged members of the Minority to focus on constructive engagement and policy alternatives rather than opposing government decisions purely for political advantage.
