Mahama slams Akufo-Addo's gov't over debt crisis
President John Mahama has strongly criticised the previous government’s economic management led by former President Nana Akufo-Addo, saying “19th December, 2022 will go down as one of the darkest days in Ghana’s economic history” as he referenced the country’s debt default and moratorium on debt internal and external repayments.
Addressing Parliament, Mahama defended his administration’s economic record, stating, “We didn’t arrest the dollar, we strengthened the Cedi to put up a good fight against the other currencies.”
He stated that beyond policy announcements and macroeconomic targets, the government’s priority is to ensure that economic recovery translates into improved living standards, job creation and expanded opportunities for the youth.
The President highlighted ongoing efforts to stabilise the economy, strengthen key sectors such as energy, agriculture and manufacturing, and enhance social intervention programmes aimed at protecting vulnerable populations.
According to him, the administration’s approach is grounded in discipline, accountability and strategic investment, with a clear objective of restoring confidence and accelerating national development.
President Mahama emphasised that his government would be measured not only by its plans but by visible results that improve the daily lives of Ghanaians
