NPP conference to rally support for Bawumia ahead of 2028 – NPP Director of Elections Nimako
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says its National Delegates Conference in Kumasi will reinforce the party’s commitment to its presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, ahead of the 2028 general election.
NPP Director of Elections Evans Nimako said the conference would provide an opportunity for the party to rally behind Dr Bawumia as it prepares for the next presidential election.
“The essence is that we are going to back our presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, committing him into the 2028 general elections,” he said.
Mr Nimako said the party remained united around Dr Bawumia and would expect the national officers to work with its structures towards the 2028 elections.
“The party is together. We are one party. We have one purpose and we are uniting for victory. So that's the theme for the conference,” he said.
The conference is being held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi and includes the election of the party’s national officers.
More than 7,000 delegates are expected to participate in the elections. Dr Bawumia became the NPP’s flagbearer for the 2028 presidential election after winning the party’s presidential primary in January 2026.
31 voting centres created
To manage the large number of delegates, the NPP has created 31 voting centres at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
Mr Nimako said about 7,153 delegates are expected to vote across the centres.
“You know, in view of the high numbers of the delegates, total of 7,153, the party has created 31 voting centres so that voting will be done in good time,” he said.
The party has engaged the Electoral Commission, the police and candidates’ agents to facilitate the voting process.
Mr Nimako said preparations, including a simulation exercise, had been conducted with the relevant stakeholders.
“So far, we’ve had a smooth arrangement going out. We are hoping that come tomorrow, all things being equal, the New Patriotic Party will organise a very successful, transparent National Delegates Conference,” he said.
The Electoral Commission will supervise the voting, while candidates’ agents will be stationed at the various centres to observe the process.
Delegates will vote to fill nine national positions.
The Ashanti Region has the highest number of delegates with 1,122, followed by Greater Accra with 773 and Eastern with 732. Savannah has the lowest with 184 delegates.
The conference will also consider proposed amendments to portions of the NPP’s constitution before the election of national officers.
