The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is today, Saturday, January 31, conducting its presidential primary across 277 constituencies to elect a flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

Voting is taking place nationwide, with more than 211,000 accredited delegates expected to cast their ballots in what party officials describe as one of the most significant internal elections in the party’s history.

Polling is underway across all 16 regions, including at the party’s national headquarters and selected diaspora voting centres, under strict electoral procedures and heightened security arrangements.

The primary follow months of intense campaigning, policy engagements and nationwide tours by the aspirants, and are widely viewed as a key indicator of the party’s unity and preparedness ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Five contenders are vying for the NPP’s top slot: former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia; former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr Bryan Acheampong; former Education Minister, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum; former NPP General Secretary, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong; and businessman Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

Party leadership has cautioned delegates and supporters to conduct themselves peacefully, urging adherence to the party’s core values of discipline, unity and fairness.

The party has also warned against the use of private security or vigilante groups, stressing that any actions capable of undermining the credibility of the process will not be tolerated.

The electorate comprises 211,849 delegates drawn from constituency, regional and national party structures, party elders and recognised external branches.

The delegate register was revised to account for deceased members and forfeitures.

The Greater Accra and Ashanti regions represent the largest voting blocs, followed by the Eastern, Central and Western regions, a factor observers say could significantly influence the outcome.

Voting is expected to close later today, after which ballots will be counted at the various polling centres before results are transmitted to the party’s national collation centre.

The eventual winner will be tasked with uniting the party, addressing internal divisions and presenting a compelling national vision as preparations begin toward the 2028 general elections.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has deployed personnel to all polling centres nationwide to maintain law and order, while the Electoral Commission is supervising the exercise in collaboration with party agents and selected civil society observers.
