Poor roads stalling development in North Gonja - Wasipewura
The Wasipewura, Paramount Chief of the Wasipe Traditional Area of Gonja, has made a passionate appeal for immediate government intervention to address the deplorable state of road infrastructure in the North Gonja District of the Savannah Region.
The appeal was made on Thursday, May 14, 2026, during a courtesy call by the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, at the Wasipe Traditional Council palace, as part of his nationwide “Thank You Tour” following the 2024 general elections.
Speaking through his spokesperson, the Wasipewura expressed deep concern over what he described as decades of neglect, stressing that the absence of quality road infrastructure continues to undermine development and economic growth in the district.
“Mr. Chairman, we want to remind you, we want to remind the Honorable Regional Minister and our District Chief Executive that North Gonja remains the only district in Ghana without a single kilometre of surfaced road.
Please, Mr. Chairman, this is from the heart of Wasipewura, we would want you to do your best to get us at least some 10 kilometres of surfaced road in our district.”
The statement drew strong reactions from residents, party supporters, and opinion leaders present at the palace, many of whom described the situation as alarming and unacceptable in this era of national development.
North Gonja District, which was carved out of the then West Gonja District in 2012 with Daboya as its capital, is considered one of the most underdeveloped districts not only in the Savannah Region but in the country as a whole.
Despite its strategic importance and agricultural potential, the district continues to grapple with significant infrastructural deficits, particularly in the road sector.
Residents say the poor road network has had far-reaching implications on their daily lives.
Transportation remains a major challenge, affecting access to healthcare services, education, and local markets.
Farming activities, the backbone of the local economy as well as business operations have also been severely affected.
During the rainy season, the situation worsens considerably, as most roads become nearly impassable, leaving several communities cut off and slowing down economic activities across the district.
The visit by Mr. Asiedu Nketia formed part of his ongoing nationwide tour aimed at appreciating party supporters and engaging with traditional authorities and constituents across the country.
The Savannah Regional Minister, Hon. Salifu Biawurbi, was part of the high-powered delegation that accompanied the NDC National Chairman on the first day of his tour in the region.
Also present was the District Chief Executive for North Gonja, Hon. Nashiru, along with other key party executives and party faithful.
The regional tour commenced from Salaga South and continued through Salaga North and Yapei-Kusawgu, before concluding the day’s activities in the Daboya-Mankarigu Constituency within the North Gonja District.
The engagement at the Wasipe Traditional Council provided a rare opportunity for chiefs, community leaders, and residents to directly present their pressing developmental concerns to the NDC leadership, with a strong emphasis on the urgent need for road infrastructure and other essential social amenities.
While the concerns raised painted a worrying picture of neglect, residents expressed cautious optimism that the intervention of the political leadership and the attention drawn by the Wasipewura’s appeal will help accelerate development efforts in the district.
They remain hopeful that North Gonja will soon receive the necessary infrastructure support to unlock its economic potential and improve the living conditions of its people.
