Ghanaians for Progress (GHAPRO) says it believes President John Mahama deserves a third term based on his performance in office.

The group, however, is calling for transparent discussions and due constitutional process on any proposed amendment to allow the President to serve another term.

“As a civil society organization committed to democracy, governance, accountability, and citizen participation, we give the following reasons for our support for the third term.

“One: Unfinished business requires exceptional leadership. Two: We respect our Constitution,” the group said.

Dialogue 

“We are, therefore, calling on Parliament, the Councils of State, the Judiciary and the stockholders to begin an open, lawful national conversation on whether the amendment or provision can be made to allow President Mahama to serve again.

“Given the exceptional circumstances we face, this must be done transparently, with a referendum and with full participation of Ghanaians,” GHAPRO said.

Media Responsibility 

The group also called on the media to exercise caution in reporting on the third-term debate.

“We call on Ghanaian media to approach the third term debate with the highest standard of generalism.

“Headlines suggesting that President Mahama has decided to seek a third term should be published where there is credible evidence supporting such a claim.

“The media should distinguish between what has been said, what has been reported and what has been speculated, and what has been independently verified.”
