Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) has unveiled a locally manufactured electric vehicle capable of recharging its battery while in motion.

The five-seater prototype, named “Nimde3 Hyiren REV,” was introduced on March 28, 2026, during the university’s 70th anniversary celebrations. It was developed over six months by three final-year Bachelor of Technology students.

The vehicle uses regenerative braking technology to convert kinetic energy from deceleration into electricity to recharge its battery, reducing reliance on stationary charging infrastructure.

Head of the Automotive and Agricultural Mechanisation Department, Prince Owusu-Ansah, said the innovation is aimed at addressing “range anxiety.”

“With our innovation, as the driver reduces the vehicle’s speed or steps on the brake while driving, the generator will automatically charge the battery,” he explained, adding that it can travel from Kumasi to Konongo and back without external charging.

He noted that the vehicle was built entirely from scratch to suit local conditions.

Vice-Chancellor Gabriel Dwomoh said the project reflects the university’s “Industry-Academia” approach and highlighted other technologies developed by the institution, including drones, RC feeders, rocket stoves, and air quality monitors.

He added that the achievement demonstrates the capacity of technical universities to support industrialisation and called for support from government and the private sector.

KsTU indicated plans to move toward commercial production, with Prof Owusu-Ansah stating that vehicles could be delivered within six months upon payment, while further improvements are expected in speed and performance.
